Negombo, situated just 7 kilometres north of Bandaranaike International Airport, is Sri Lanka's most popular gateway city and a beach destination in its own right. The town's famous fish market comes to life every morning as colourful fishing boats return with their catch. Negombo's fishing industry has been central to its identity for centuries — the Dutch even called it “Little Rome” due to its large Catholic community, and the town is dotted with beautiful churches and Dutch colonial architecture.
The serene Negombo Lagoon and its network of Dutch-built canals are perfect for boat trips, bird watching, and sunset kayaking. The beaches north of town at Waikkal are some of the most peaceful in Sri Lanka, offering a true escape from the hustle and bustle.
