The southern coast of Sri Lanka, stretching from the historic port of Galle to the pristine shores of Tangalle, is one of the island's most rewarding travel corridors. The UNESCO-listed Galle Fort anchors the west end with its cobblestone streets, colonial villas, and dramatic ocean ramparts. From here, a string of beautiful beaches unfolds: Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, Tangalle, and Hiriketiya.
Mirissa is the jewel of the south, a crescent-shaped bay backed by coconut palms where the waters are warm and calm from November to April. The town is also Sri Lanka's premier whale watching destination — between December and April, Blue Whales (the largest animals on earth) and Sperm Whales can be seen just 10-15 kilometres offshore, along with pods of spinner dolphins.
Sea turtles nest on the beaches around Rekawa and Kosgoda, and visitors can participate in conservation programmes to watch nesting turtles and hatchling releases. The surf breaks at Ahangama and Midigama attract international surfers, while Hiriketiya Bay is a Instagram-famous horseshoe bay with consistent waves for beginners and intermediate surfers.
